Welcome to Alton

No, not Alton, Hampshire. I mean our new 1.0.0 world! It is now open for business via the pool at the base of the big tree. Come on in and claim some land.

Important Notices:
- Spawning is a little weird right now. The SpawnControl mod is temporarily (?) disabled. This means that if you have a bed homepoint (ie. the last bed in which you slept still exists), you'll respawn there when you die, regardless of in which world you died. Otherwise, you'll spawn at the global spawn point of the world in which you died.

- The Nether in the main world works properly again. When I was digging around in the config files, I discovered that the scale factor linking the normal and nether worlds was off, which was the cause of all the portals breaking. Things should work as before now! (At least, my/Royce's/Colin's/fire pyramid portals work. Other people's portals are harder to find).

1.0 Very Soon!

Bukkit's twitter just posted an almost-released version. Sounds like there's just a few bugs left. Maybe today?

Hamachi no more!

Good news everyone! I've been tweaking the server, and we're now hamachi-free! I've sent an email to most everyone who has been whitelisted (so that you can log in), but let me know if you're somehow blocked from getting on the server. And as usual, if you find yourself screwed (stranded on a floating island with nothing but sharks in your pockets), email me and we'll figure it out. This shouldn't affect anyone's character or stuff at all though.

Check your email to get the new links that you'll use to connect to the server / dynamic map.

Obviously, I'm also shutting down hamachi now too, in case you're wondering why that doesn't connect.

Woot.

Server down for a bit

Hey folks,
As the title would suggest, the server is down for a day or so. I've been fiddling the server computer, and as part of doing so, I had to disable hamachi. If you're really wanting to get back on the server, email me with angry words and I'll speed up the process, but I figured it was safe since the server has been pretty quiet recently.

1.8!

We're running 1.8 now. Let me know if you have any trouble. I am holding off introducing the new world until 1.9 though, since that is apparently coming soon. Fewer unused worlds that way :)

Thursday, September 22, 2011

1.8 Really soon!

Looks like there's a recommended Bukkit build for 1.8.1. I'll see if I can get it up and running tonight.

1.8 Soon!

Looks like 1.8 hits this week. If all goes well, I'll bring us up to date and try to drop in an adventure map :D. Maybe swapping it for WorldTwo if nobody's made too much use of that yet...?

Uh... use /sethome in the new world

So... I'm having a permissions issue that prevents me from resetting the global spawn point in the new world. So, please use your /sethome in the new world so that you don't end up respawning in an underground lava hole or drowning in solid rock . Seriously... this is your warning. Setting the new /sethome won't overwrite the /sethome in the other world.

...Ok, if you don't read this and it kills you and you lose your stuff, lemme know and I'll restore it :(

Multiverse, but at a cost

Hey Folks,

As I'd mentioned to a few of you that I would, I got Multiverse going on our server. The good news is that that allows us a means to include new kinds of worlds in the future. When Notch ever gets around to deploying the Adventure Update or Skylands, we'll be able to create a world of that type and link it to ours.

In the meantime, we have a fresh normal world to explore right now. You might notice a new tall tree near Invader Station. Go to the fenced-off pool at its base and dive in. You'll be warped to the new area. Aside from a little spawn-shelter and a pool that offers the return trip, the world is totally untouched. It also has its own nether.

Speaking of nether, there is a bit of a price for all of this, and it's fairly steep. Multiverse broke and re-made the link between our normal world and the nether, meaning that our portals are a mess. I'm not actually sure how we should go about resolving it... it'll probably be a fairly big project. Personally, my ship portal goes out into dangerous nether-ground, while most other portals seem to link to stupid places. Colin's normal-world portal seems safe, though re-linked to one of my nether portals, as does the fire pyramid portal (re-linking to one of Gwil's).

So that we have at least some reliable way to access our nether-hub, I've dropped a teleporter into the top floor of Invader Station. Just walk onto the gold block, and it'll take you there. The return trip works the same way.

I'm sorry about the mess that it's made of the portals, but I really think that we'll be better in the long run, since we'll no longer be restricted to our original world as new content is released.

Finally, if you feel that the portal-scramble particularly screws you, I'm happy to provide you with materials to build a new space in the nether (if need be), or to just make you a teleporter like the one that I put in Invader Station (or both). Shoot me an email if you'd like one/both of these.

PS. I'm still trying to get the dynamic map working nicely. It should work for all the worlds now, but it seems to be a little bit squirrly when I try to change perspective.

PPS. Looks like the Adventure Update might be sooner than I thought. If it's a separate world and comes like, immediately, I'll swap it for the world I just added. Otherwise, we may have a couple of worlds to explore shortly :)

Bad News + Good News

Bad news first. So, when the power went out the other day, the server corrupted. Good news: After some doing, we're running again, with the world as it was. Yup, I SAVED THE WORLD. I've added an automatic backup plugin to prevent this from happening in the future. (It'll backup the world daily).

I had to run the world through a chunk-repairing tool, which seems to have left our dear planet with some, ah, "scars" from its ordeal. You may find odd chunks shearing the landscape. If you've lost part of your house or your new puppy, then shoot me an email and I'll see if I can at least restore some of your materials. Ok, maybe not the puppy.

Oh, everyone should have their inventories and spawnpoints still, but let me know if that's not the case for you.

Minecarts

Anybody else having weird issues with minecart stuff? My sign commands don't seem to be responding properly, and my powered rails (the official ones) seem to work only when they're *unpowered*.

Internet!

[Update2] - Ok, now we're really back! Give it a 1/2 h or so to finish rendering the new dynmap and we'll be set. Maybe by 11:00. Oh, and dynmap works again. It should even work for the nether. One thing to note: I ran into an error when I booted up again, and rolled back a week or so to compensate. I don't think much happened between that version of the world and now, but if you lost any components that you'd like, lemme know and I'll restore it.

[Update] Of course, now the server computer is having issues. Stand by.

Sweet, internet happiness - we're back online. I'mma go boot the server.

1.6.6 is live! [Updated]

UPDATE: Server down while Rogers reconnects the internet that they mistakenly disconnected. Phooey. It's like I've lost a sense. Should be a day or so.

I have seen the nether, and it is hot and warbley!

Bukkit has updated, and so have I. The nether now works in SMP as does some other stuff, I'm sure. In any case, 1.6.6 is the version for you. After updating to that, don't ever let it update unless you hear otherwise on here, or you'll end up getting out of sync with our server.

Oh, and if you've not already seen, minecart mania should be functioning nicely again too. Possibly dynmap, but I'll have to double check. It was giving some trouble last I saw.

Server status

So the server is still running 1.5, and I'm hoping to move it to 1.6.x once a stable version is released. Among other things... multiplayer nether!

In the meantime, the minecarts should work again, but the map still seems fishy.

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Sounds like 1.6 this week

But the server won't be updated immediately, as promised. Did you remember to download the client that doesn't automatically update so that you can keep playing on the old version?

Updated: Server's back

Update:
Server's running again. Unfortunately, Minecart Mania needs an update before carts work all fancy-like again. Oh the joys of a beta game. In the future, I'm going to hold the server on a stable version after an update until all the pieces are updated too. Last time I'll mention: be sure to grab the new client so that you aren't forced to autoupdate when Minecraft patches are released.

--
Hey all,

So Bukkit has a recommended build again. I'll see about getting it up and running today. Be sure to replace your minecraft client by deleting it and downloading the new one freshly to make sure that you get the new launcher. Since that one doesn't auto-update minecraft (you have to ask it to), we'll be able to avoid getting out-of-date with the server in the future.

[UPDATED] Where's the server

UPDATE:
So Bukkit has a 1.5_2 development built up right now, but it doesn't seem to be stable enough to work. Should have a decent one soonish though?

Bukkit hasn't been updated yet, so the server is still down. I'll have it up again shortly after they update. To avoid this in the future, I recommend everybody download the new client. The old one autoupdates, which puts everybody on a different version than the server. The new one (which has a different login screen) asks you if you want to update, allowing us to run a version behind until everything is stable. Probably not much we can do for this time, but now we know for the future.

Friday, April 8, 2011

Oooh, another update is coming?

From RPS:

...next week should see the release of Minecraft 1.5, which offers the aforementioned achievements and now also weather. The latter’s an exciting idea, as it’s one of those tried and tested ways of really building in-game atmosphere (see: Stalker, WoW). Here’s what we’re in for:

“There’s periodic downfall (snow in snowy areas, rain in others, nothing in deserts) that make the sky darker, hides the sun, moon and stars, and makes everything wet. Ice grows back in cold regions, and snowfall covers the ground when it’s snowing. During rain/snow, there can be occasional thunderstorms with lightning.” On Twitter, he also added that “Wolves get wet in the rain. Crops will get watered.”

Update: Video!

Also, apparently Minecraft is due to exit beta Nov 11 2011. Neat

LantisMinecraft Updates! [UPDATED]

[UPDATE]: Since 1.4, I've started falling through the minecart tracks. I verified that it's not the fault of Minecart Mania... looks like it's just a 1.4 thing. If you lose iron to the bug (or if you have any ideas as to what we can do about it), lemme know.
[UPADATE2]: It looks like it happens when a minecart turns a corner that is against a wall. Minecarts track corners that have a bit of room around them seem to be fine.

I've got the server running on Bukkit now, and have put in the mods that I've spoken with many of you about. (Also we need a better name than LantisMinecraft)

Notable Plugins:
- Motd: Provides the /who command to see who is on the server (this also provides the new welcome message)
- HeroicDeath: Broadcasts a message upon player death, FPS-style
- Boats should no longer break upon impact
- I can now access the server stuff from upstairs, so I won't have to run up and down so much if somebody needs something resolved.

Still reading? These ones are the best changes:
- SpawnControl: I've used this to clean up the global spawn point. It's now on the top of the spawn fortress. Also, you can now use /sethome to change your own respawn point (on a 4hr cooldown).
- Dynmap: This one's really nice! We now have a live google maps-style map of our server. I'm hoping to post a video of this soon. To access this, type the ip address that hamachi assigns tthe server into a browser, followed by ":8123" (to access the right port). Also, don't hack me.
- MinecartMania: This introduces some EXTENSIVE options for building systems of minecart tracks. We're using all of the parts except for Autocart and the older pressure plates plugin. I can't list it all here, so follow the link and watch the video below. Let's make our minecart station awesome.

There are still some things I'd like to investigate (SMP Nether, anyone?), but any feedback is appreciated.

Server Update!

Beta 1.4 is live, now with wolves! I'll be updating the server momentarily.

Also! I'm looking into the possibility of using Bukkit to manage the server. In addition to making the server interface nicer on my end, it should also give us access to a live, dynamic map of the world, as well as tools to manage a host of other mods. How do people feel about that? Are there any key mods that we might want to introduce into our minecraft ecosystem? Check out http://plugins.bukkit.org/#ti=&ta=all&au=

UPDATED - Minecart Lag?

Update: Nope! It was just me. We should still keep an eye on the number of minecarts-in-motion, but it wasn't the source of my woes.

Hey guys - quick question: are you seeing brutal, unplayable lag today? I was on this morning, and lagged like I've never seen before. Apparently perpetual motion minecart tracks can lag a SMP server to death, and I'm wondering if that's the cause. If it keeps up, we're going to have to redesign our subway systems so that carts are no longer continuously in motion. :O

Back up again

Hey folks, sorry for the outage. No more honeymoons that line up with new content patches - I promise! The server is just updating now / converting the map for the new patch. It should be good to go shortly.

Enjoy!

Server up!

So, I'm all moved in, and I'm told that you guys can access the server again. Let me know how it goes. It should be pretty stable now, but it might be down from time to time (briefly) in the next couple of weeks as work continues on the house.

Moving soon!

Hey all. Moving day is coming up, and at some point I'll have to bring the server down for a day or so. That'll either be today or tomorrow. As it turns out, internet at the new place will be comparable to the old (maybe a little better) for a while yet. I still hope for the faster internet in the future, but I'm told it'll be a couple of months before it comes to our area.

Whoop.

Also, that swordsman statue is great. Whose was that?

Thursday, February 3, 2011

(FIXED) Down today

>> Server's back up and running! You'll need to update your ip address though. (for the second last time before we get some more stability :). T-minus 8 days until the move, if all goes according to plan)
------------

Aw crap. I borked Hamachi, and can't fix it just yet. I should be able to get it going tonight, and then I'll pull down this post.

Wilkommen auf Wolkesfälschen

The fortress is complete! Now I can look down on all of you, except phil and his crazy upside-down cabin... speaking of which, I stole some of your sky grass :P
It's got a pretty good view too.

It's a MAP

Check it out! I made a map of the Skyroads, and surrounding environs. Distances are relatively to scale, landmark sizes are not.
Hope this helps everyone make their way around :D
Let me know if there is a new location you would like connected to the Skyroads!

Growing Pains

I'll post things here so that I stop repeating/apologizing for them :P. Just a couple of notes:

I'm still trying to get things a little more stable on the server. I'm so close to being able to ditch hamachi, but there seems to be a bug that causes my network adapter on the server to stop responding after a non-hamachi connection attempt. It stays disabled (brings down minecraft, hamachi, internet, everything) until the computer is rebooted. Apparently other people are having this issue too, so I'm not sure if it's one that I'll be able to resolve. If anybody has any ideas / luck on the forums, let me know. Otherwise, if you see hamachi down, it's probably because I'm still trying to troubleshoot this. Just email/skype at me and I'll cut it out :)

Also - it's still possible that minecraft is responsible for some of my connection woes. For now, the workaround is that I can reboot it from time to time to keep things working. Sorry for any interruptions (they should always be quite brief, again email to check, and if I don't respond immediately, then something actually fishy is going on). Also, while it looks like my current internet package is just sufficient to host a small server, my upstream bandwidth should be doubling next month, and that should help with the lag (especially when people explore new territory / just log in). Hopefully that resolves these issues wholesale... but otherwise, we can look for other options.

First Post

Now that we're getting a fair number of people on the server, I thought it would be nice to have a place to communicate with one another. Stuff like "hey look what I built!" or "can anyone spare iron for a minecart project?". Oh, and "I set the server on fire, so it'll be down for an hour."

Let me know what you think. If you'd like to make use of this, I'll add you all as authors on this blog.
